PBS moved to Soundmouse!
As of October 1, 2023 PBS changed its cue management system from RapidCue to Soundmouse. The instructions below ONLY apply to PBS distributed content. All content distributed will continue to go through RapidCue for music cue sheets until further notice.
How do I do a music cue sheet for GBH?
Music cue sheets for any broadcast content distributed via PBS, must be done in Soundmouse. Music Cue sheets for any non-PBS distributed broadcast content should be done in RapidCue.
What information do I need to complete my music cue sheets?
Music cue sheets will ask for:
➜ Data about the production (episode name, airdate, producer, length)
➜ Song/Cue name
➜ Song/Cue length
➜ Entitled Parties (e.g. Composers, Authors including Lyricists, Arrangers, Publishers)
➜ Affiliated Performing Rights Societies (PROs) for each Entitled Party
➜ Usage (theme music, background music, etc)
➜ Ownership percentages
➜ Cue Source (licensed, specially composed, etc)
➜ Time code in and out
What are "entitled parties"?
Entitled parties are the composers, lyricists, arrangers, publishing companies, etc. that have an interest in the music and are entitled to collect royalties for the use of their music.
What are GBH's music publishing companies?
For newly composed music synched with our productions after December 21, 2014, GBH's publishing companies are as follows*:
➜ Masspike Music (ASCAP)
➜ North Beacon Music (BMI)
➜ Brighton Landing Music (SESAC)
*For Composers with a SOCAN (in Canada) or PRS (usually the UK) affiliation, use GBH's ASCAP music publishing company.
*If in the composer's agreement the composer is entitled to a portion of the publisher’s share of the composition(s), then the composer's publishing company and their % share of the music publishing should be included, and the GBH share should be reduced accordingly.
At what point should music cue sheets be done in the production cycle?
ASCAP and BMI only have a short look back window for broadcast schedules. Music cue sheets should be submitted via RapidCue or Soundmouse no later than 3 months after the first air/launch date of the project.
Where can I find more information about music cue sheets?
ASCAP and BMI are the two main PROs in the United States to which most entitled parties are affiliated. However, new PRO's have recently come into existence (e.g. AllTrack and Global Music Rights) and some entitled parties have shifted to these newer organizations. Countries outside the US also typically have their own PROs. ASCAP and BMI each have robust websites where you can find out more information about music cue sheets, how royalties are distributed, and how to look up registered music cues and affiliated entitled parties.
